ABSTRACT

Restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected people's opportunities to engage in activities that are meaningful to their lives. In response to these constraints, many people, including older adults, turned to digital technologies as alternative ways to pursue meaningful activities. These technology-mediated activities, however, presented new challenges for older adults' everyday use of technology. In this paper, we investigate how older adults used digital technologies for meaningful activities during COVID-19 restrictions. We conducted in-depth interviews with 40 older adults and analyzed the interview data through the lens of self-determination theory (SDT). Our analysis shows that using digital technologies for meaningful activities can both support and undermine older people's three basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. We argue that future technologies should be designed to empower older adults' content creation, engagement in personal interests, exploration of technology, effortful communication, and participation in beneficent activities. © 2023 ACM.

ABSTRACT

Surveys of urban history from ancient times to the present reveal a continuum of collective responses to pandemics ranging from quarantine facilities and monitoring the spread of disease to building new wastewater networks. The contemporary COVID-19 pandemic includes new digital tools and techniques that supplement (and sometimes replace) the existing analogue responses, while raising new ethical issues with respect to privacy. A typology of pandemic responses in cities is created, based on human–building interaction (HBI) principles. This typology can be used to compare and contrast analogue and digital responses relating to distancing, monitoring and sanitising. It provides a summary of a wide range of individual and collective implications of pandemics and demonstrates the indelible connections between pandemics and the built environment. In addition, the typology provides a tool to interpret some of the opportunities and drawbacks of digitalising cities. PRACTICE RELEVANCE The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the enduring co-evolution of cities and disease through history. This study aims to inform future pandemic preparedness by providing a framework for designers, managers and users of public spaces to evaluate the multiple implications of emerging technologies that are integrated within the urban fabric. While the rapid rise of digitalisation to advance urban health agendas continues to raise new questions relating to individual and civic freedoms, HBI qualitatively provides a lens through which to examine the overlapping spatial, ethical, and temporal consequences for humans and the built environment. Urban planning researchers and designers can use HBI principles to humanise the sustainable smart city. © 2023 The Author(s).

ABSTRACT

Digital transformation, which significantly impacts our personal, social, and economic spheres of life, is regarded by many as the most significant development of recent decades. In an industrial context, based on a systematic literature review of 262 papers selected from the ProQuest database, using the methodology of David and Han, this paper discusses Industry 4.0 technologies as the key drivers and/or enablers of digital transformation for business practices, models, processes, and routines in the current digital age. After carrying out a systematic literature review considering key Industry 4.0 technologies, we discuss the individual and collective ways in which competitiveness in contemporary organizations and institutions is enhanced. Specifically, we discuss how these technologies contribute as antecedents, drivers, and enablers of environmental and social sustainability, corporate growth and diversification, reshoring, mass customization, B2B cooperation, supply chain integration, Lean Six Sigma, quality of governance, innovations, and knowledge related to dealing with challenges arising from global pandemics such as COVID-19. A few challenges related to the effective adoption and implementation of Industry 4.0 are also highlighted, along with some suggestions to overcome them.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for higher education institutions to modernize and embrace the post-digital age. This study evaluates students' perspectives of utilizing MS Teams as a means of facilitating remote learning during the pandemic. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was employed as the theoretical framework to examine students' views on self-efficacy, facilitating conditions, ease of use, usefulness, and intention to use. The results showcase positive views of MS Teams, with self-efficacy rated the highest among the five constructs, followed by ease of use, facilitating conditions, intention to use, and usefulness. Additionally, no significant differences were found in students' perceptions based on gender. MS Teams has proven to be a successful platform for delivering online learning and communicating, bridging the divide of distance and time in teaching and learning. As discussions about the future of higher education in the post-pandemic world have commenced among academia and university officials, it is crucial to consider the impact of COVID-19 on student learning and provide suggestions for a more sustainable and effective post-pandemic education. © 2023 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

It has been witnessed that digital technology has the potential to improve the efficiency of emergent healthcare management in COVID-19, which however has not been widely adopted due to unclear definition and configuration. This research aims to propose a proof of concept of digital twins for emergent healthcare management through configuring the cyber and functional interdependencies of healthcare systems at local and city levels. Critical interdependencies of healthcare systems have been firstly identified at both levels, then the information and associated cyber and functional interdependencies embedded in seven critical hospital information systems (HISs) have been identified and mapped. The proposed conceptual digital twin-based approach has been then developed for information coordination amongst these critical HISs at both local and city levels based on permissioned blockchain to (1) integrate and manage the information from seven critical HISs, and further (2) predict the demands of medical resources according to patient trajectory. A case study has been finally conducted at three hospitals in London during the COVID-19 period, and the results showed that the developed framework of blockchain-integrated digital twins is a promising way to provide more accurate and timely procurement information to decision-makers and can effectively support evidence-based decisions on medical resource allocation in the pandemic. © 2023 ICE Publishing: All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

The immersion of digital technologies in the initial training of Natural Sciences teachers has become even more complex since the beginning of the Covid-19 Pandemic. In this sense, the present study proposed to analyze how digital technologies are present in the training of Natural Sciences teachers. For this, 15 semi-structured interviews were carried out and an online questionnaire was applied to teachers and students of the Biology, Chemistry and Physics subprojects of the Pedagogical Residency Program/Capes (RP/Capes) of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). Based on the principles of Critical Discourse Analysis, the reports identified difficulties in problematizing training with digital technologies, in view of the need to restructure the curricular matrices of the degrees, in addition to the already rooted instrumental training of future teachers. In this way, it is essential to expand the promotion of initial teacher training programs, such as PR, regarding the need to remove the instrumentalizing perspective that limits dialogue with technologies, making actions attentive to the potential of such digital spaces. © 2023 Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Instituto de Fisica. Under the current conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic, the practice of providing goods and services, as well as their availability to consumers, remains relevant and requires further scientific research. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the conceptual basis of using digital marketing technologies in the commercial activities of enterprises to increase their value, competitiveness and ensure sustainability of development in the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic. The methodological basis of the study of the use of digital marketing technologies in the commercial activities of enterprises in the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic is a systematic approach and principles of digital marketing management, including: goal orientation, efficiency, functionality and complexity. The feasibility of the complex application of digital marketing tools in the commercial activities of the enterprise for the implementation of the marketing strategy in the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic has been proven, including: contextual advertising, SEO and SEM promotion, banner advertising, advertising windows, television advertising, radio advertising, advertising in gaming, shopping and other applications, native advertising, SMS mailing, QR codes in offline mode, viral advertising, advertising in messengers, teaser advertising, retargeting. The advantages and disadvantages of using digital marketing in the commercial activity of the enterprise in the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic are highlighted. The need to apply promising innovative implementations in the field of digital marketing has been proven, which should include: the use of online testing;implementation of voice search;use of chat bots;use of video marketing;use of interactive content.

ABSTRACT

The chapter contains a study of the impact of the new coronavirus pandemic 2019–2020 on the business activity of economic entities of the EAEU and BRICS jurisdictions in the implementation of foreign trade activities. The authors note the need and highlight the opportunities for wider and more intensive use of digital technologies of Industry 4.0 in the legal regulation of export–import transactions between the parties-residents of the member states of integration associations with the participation of the Russian Federation. The authors substantiate that in modern realities, infectious epidemiological risks are considered not as a force majeure circumstance but as restrictions on the collective work of employees of companies, including foreign trade commercial organizations. The authors argue that this pandemic set of legal procedures for the wider and more intensive use of digital technologies in Industry 4.0 should be enshrined in the provisions of the international convention, which countries participating in integration associations will be able to join, thereby ensuring the entry into force of the relevant regulatory provisions in their jurisdictions. The authors propose several legal procedures for wider and more intensive use of digital technologies of Industry 4.0 in the implementation of foreign economic transactions, which launched and implemented after the announcement of the next pandemic by the World Health Organization. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

ABSTRACT

In face of the COVID-19 pandemic, over 1.5 billion students were affected by the closure of school institutions in 191 countries worldwide (UNESCO, COVID-19), forcing educational institutions to migrate quickly to online and virtual teaching formats. This article aims to analyze the importance of Digital Information and Communication Technologies (DICT) in the teaching-learning process during the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper uses an analytical-interpretive method to provoke reflections that may help researchers, educators, tutors, and administrators to understand the challenges and technological innovations that were developed and experienced during this crisis, as well as implications for the future of remote synchronous delivery. In our analyses, it was observed that it is not enough to have access to the latest technological resources in order to have an effective online learning experience. It is necessary to provide opportunities to students and professors to develop a new learning path, using information and communication technologies that are gradually shifting from corporate environments to an educational context. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021. ABSTRACT

In this note, we present the preliminary findings from a qualitative interview-based study among migrant workers in India who went through much hardship in the wake of one of most strict pandemic-induced lockdown in 2020. Through this study, we narrate the four ways in which digital technologies enabled the relief and crisis mitigation efforts targeted to migrant workers and how that in turn shaped the workers' experience of the crisis and associated relief efforts. We argue that more flexible use of familiar digital tools and channels, collaboration across state and non-state actors and assistance from human intermediaries in navigating ICTs make for more effective and inclusive relief measures. © 2022 ACM.

ABSTRACT

The article analyses the key dysfunctions of the digitalization of higher education, changes in grades and students' attitudes to online learning during the pandemic. The key research method is a questionnaire survey of students of Russian universities. Empirical data are presented by the results of a study of students of Russian universities conducted in June-November 2021 (N= 1 107). Additionally, three focus groups were held with 29 participants (April–May 2022). We concluded that the optimism of students in assessing the benefits of digitalization of education is associated with the possibility of a facilitated search for educational materials, the exchange of experience, and cooperation in the information environment. The study's results illustrate the transformation of the role of the teacher, who loses the function of a mentor who transfers knowledge. In the new conditions, students request the entertaining nature of learning and the use of digital technologies to keep them interested. In the course of the study, we identified dysfunctions of the digitalization of education: motivation (unwillingness of students to take notes and memorize material in the conditions of the widespread availability of information, transfer of educational activities to the background, "sofa” learning format);control and assessment of knowledge (priority to test algorithms, unethical behavior during control activities and unfair practices of using digital technologies);communication (deterioration of interpersonal communication skills, focus on automation of feedback, "unmanned” learning technologies). Based on the study's results, we concluded the negative consequences of the digitalization of education during the pandemic: reduced concentration of attention, a distraction from educational goals, a superficial perception of information, lack of critical analysis skills. A chain of dysfunction was revealed, including a decrease in interest in learning, a selective approach to learning, segregation of knowledge, and deformation of the system for monitoring and evaluating knowledge. © 2022 Russian Public Opinion Research Center, VCIOM. ABSTRACT

This paper draws on a community-based participatory action research project located in Seattle - before and during the COVID-19 pandemic - to examine the unanticipated impact that the pandemic has had on reducing barriers for survivors of domestic violence seeking protection through the legal system. We draw on interviews with survivors and victim advocates, along with autoethnographic participant observation during Domestic Violence Protection Order (DVPO) hearings, to trace survivors' experiences navigating the DVPO process before and after its transition from an analogue to digital system. We situate this research at the intersection of legal and digital geographic scholarship to analyze how the law and digital technologies reinforce the spatial operation of power and exclusion, while they simultaneously provide emancipatory potential for women's experiences of security, legal subjectivity and emotional personhood. By focusing on how the courts' transition to a digital system affects the emotional personhood and legal subjectivity of domestic violence survivors, this paper advances feminist calls within legal and digital geographies scholarship that encourage more sustained engagement with feminist thought to understand the varied effects of the law and digital technologies – respectively – on gendered bodies.

Digital technology development caused the digital transformation of the economy and society. E-commerce, the most widespread among digital innovations, reached a significant share, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, impacting economic growth. The progress of digital technologies and the evolution of e-commerce can contribute to the more sustainable development of organizations and worldwide economies. This paper analyzed the influences of digital transformation and e-commerce on GDP and sustainable development. The study used the Eurostat database to gather the research variables for the EU countries. The paper used artificial neural networks and cluster analysis to reveal the significant influence of digital transformation and e-commerce on GDP and sustainable organizational development. Countries with a low level of digital transformation and e-commerce should propel these activities to increase economic performance sustainably.

POINTS OF INTERESTThis study explored the experiences of using digital technology by older and disabled people who were social distancing and shielding during the first period of lockdown over the Covid 19 Pandemic.The pandemic saw a greater need for support to use digital technologies as face-to-face social activities were limited.The biggest change in the use of digital technology and support requested from older and disabled people over the lockdown was the growth of video calling.Digital technologies were also used for entertainment like watching online videos, playing computer games, and listening to audiobooks and music.The study found older and disabled people used digital technologies to help them, but the increased use could be challenging and stressful.Both initial and ongoing digital support must be available to older and disabled people, and digital technology support workers need knowledge and experience of digital technology and disability to offer good support. This study explored the uses of digital technologies by older and disabled people who were social distancing and shielding during the early Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns. The study considers the benefits, difficulties, and technical support needs of these groups of people during this time. Using a case study methodology, in-depth interviews were undertaken with 11 older and disabled people recruited from a local digital support service, and their support workers. Five main themes were identified by the research team. These were: technology was a mixed blessing and caused frustration;technology use increased during lockdown;technology supported resilience and contributed to identity through 'stimulation, knowledge and friendship';technology needs to be accessible, and support was required to facilitate technology use. Understanding these experiences will enable policymakers, commissioners, and providers to develop better and more responsive digital support for older and disabled people in the future.

ABSTRACT

Supportive digital technologies for the community practice of Faith remain relatively under-explored in Human Computer Interaction (HCI). We report on interviews with 12 members of a Buddhist community in the UK who self-organized and used video-conferencing tools to remain connected to their faith community during the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to understand how they adopted online tools for their practice while shaping new collective experiences. Findings from Reflexive Thematic Analysis were combined with autoethnographic insights from the first author, also a community member. We evidence qualities of the practice that were valued by participants before and during the pandemic, and the limitations of existing tools and screen-based interactions. We contribute empirical insights on mediated religious and spiritual practice, advancing HCI discourses on Techno-Spirituality, Tangible Embodied Interaction, Soma Design and More-than-Human Worlds. We further develop design considerations for enriching spiritual experiences that are meaningful to practitioners in communities of faith. © 2023 Owner/Author.

ABSTRACT

This paper offers an exploration of everyday life during the Covid-19 pandemic in Bangladesh with a focus on how it has been reordered through commonplace digital technologies and services. We present findings from a qualitative field study. Themes emerging from the findings suggest that digital technologies have been important to the reordering of everyday life during the pandemic: videoconferencing have been instrumental in allowing urban residents to work from home, digital money has enabled workers in rural areas to continue financial transactions, and social media has been a source of news and rumours during the pandemic. However, the benefits of the digital reordering of everyday life are unevenly distributed. The themes emerging are used to frame a discussion of the notion of reordering compared to the concept of resilience within ICTD. © 2022 ACM.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced a rapid shift to virtual delivery of treatment and care to individuals affected by domestic violence and sexual violence. A rapid evidence assessment (REA) was undertaken to examine the effectiveness, feasibility and acceptability of trauma-focused virtual interventions for persons affected by domestic violence and sexual violence. The findings from this review will provide guidance for service providers and organizational leaders with the implementation of virtual domestic violence and sexual violence-focused interventions. The REA included comprehensive search strategies and systematic screening of and relevant articles. Papers were included into this review (1) if they included trauma-focused interventions; (2) if the intervention was delivered virtually; and (3) if the article was published in the English-language. Twenty-one papers met inclusion criteria and were included for analysis. Findings from the rapid review demonstrate that virtual interventions that incorporate trauma-focused treatment are scarce. Online interventions that incorporate trauma-focused treatment for this at-risk group are limited in scope, and effectiveness data are preliminary in nature. Additionally, there is limited evidence of acceptability, feasibility and effectiveness of virtual interventions for ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse populations experiencing domestic violence and sexual violence. Accessing virtual interventions was also highlighted as a barrier to among participants in studies included in the review. Despite the potential of virtual interventions to respond to the needs of individuals affected by domestic violence and/or sexual violence, the acceptability and effectiveness of virtual trauma-focused care for a diverse range of populations at risk of violence are significantly understudied.

Use of digital technologies to support meaningful engagement of people with dementia and carers increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this scoping review was to determine the effectiveness of digital technologies in supporting the engagement and wellbeing of people with dementia and family carers at home and in care homes. Studies published in peer reviewed literature were identified across four databases (CINAHL, Medline, PUBMED, PsychINFO). Sixteen studies met the inclusion criteria. Findings indicate that digital technologies can potentially support the wellbeing of people with dementia and family carers, although only a few studies had measured impact on wellbeing, as many were reporting on technology at proof-of-concept stage rather than commercially ready products. Moreover, current studies lacked meaningful involvement of people with dementia, family carers, and care professionals in the design of the technology. Future research should bring together people with dementia, family carers, care professionals and designers to coproduce digital technologies with researchers and evaluate them using robust methodologies. Codesign should start early in the intervention development phase and continue until implementation. There is a need for real world applications that nurture social relationships by focusing on how digital technologies can support more personalised, adaptive forms of care. Developing the evidence base to identify what makes digital technologies effective in supporting the wellbeing of people with dementia is crucial. Future interventions should therefore consider the needs and preferences of people with dementia, their families, and professional carers, as well as the suitability and sensitivity of wellbeing outcome measures.

ABSTRACT

When the COVID-19 pandemic emerged in early 2020, not only did it abruptly impede the progress that was being made toward achieving global targets to end the HIV pandemic, but it also created significant impacts on the physical and mental health of middle-aged and older men who have sex with men living with HIV. Utilizing a qualitative, community-based participatory research approach, we conducted semi-structured, one-on-one interviews with 16 ethnoracially diverse, middle-aged and older men who have sex with men living with HIV residing in Southern Nevada, to examine the different ways the COVID-19 pandemic directly impacted their physical and mental health, and explore how they eventually coped and thrived during the peak of the crisis. Using thematic analysis to analyze our interview data, we identified three prominent themes: (1) challenges to obtaining credible health information, (2) the physical and mental health impacts of the COVID-19-pandemic-imposed social isolation, and (3) digital technologies and online connections for medical and social purposes. In this article, we extensively discuss these themes, the current discourse on these themes in academic literature, and how the perspectives, input, and lived experiences of our participants during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic could be critical to addressing issues they had already been experiencing prior to the emergence of the pandemic in 2020, and just as importantly, helping us best prepare in stark anticipation of the next potentially devastating pandemic.

ABSTRACT

PurposeIn the light of high reliance on digital technology to mitigate the consequences of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and its containment measures, this study investigates the factors influencing firms' decision to adopt digital technologies during COVID-19 in four Middle East and Northern African (MENA) countries, namely, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia.Design/methodology/approachThe study used the International Labour Organization (ILO)/Economic Research Forum (ERF) COVID-19 - MENA Monitor Enterprise Survey (CMMENT), comprising 5,480 firms, surveyed during 2020-2021. The empirical model is estimated using the linear probability model (LPM) to address the problem of unobserved heterogeneity between firms, countries, and time.FindingsThe results revealed that firm characteristics, such as firm size and foreign ownership, encourage digital transformation in the business sector. Moreover, firms that face challenges during the pandemic, comply with the containment measures, and receive government assistance are more likely to adopt digital solutions. Furthermore, the results indicated that firms operating in services sector have a higher likelihood to adopt digital technology. Disaggregating the total sample into several sub-samples, the results are robust across countries and technology types, supporting the initial hypothesis that COVID-19 encourages digital transformation in the MENA region.Originality/valueThe study has numerous contributions. First, to the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the sole study that uses micro data collected during the COVID-19 to examine the factors influencing firms' decision to adopt and invest in digital solutions in the MENA countries. Second, the paper employs the LPM estimator to address the issue of unobserved heterogeneity between firms, countries and time. Finally, the paper offers some practical recommendations for accelerating digital transformation in MENA region.
